Strada del Romanico nell'Alto Astigiano

Ring route in the northern lands surrounding Asti, a step back in time, admiring the architectural jewels of the Romanesque art.

Parish churches, small churches and low-traffic roads for a tour of history and culture.

Our itinerary starts from Cocconato d’Asti, a lovely village listed among the Borghi più Belli d’Italia (Most Beautiful Hamlets of Italy) also called “Monferrato’s Riviera”. The lower part of the village with its shops is worth a careful visit, as well as the upper old town with its unique atmosphere of the past and a breath-taking view.

Following our trail, continue riding among the vineyards up the hill in the direction of Montechiaro d’Asti, located on top of the hill compared to the other “villae-novae” (new villages) of the area and flanked by Rilate Valley and Versa Valley. Park your bike and take a break to admire the beauty of the hamlet and don’t forget to make a detour to visit the Romanesque Parish Church of Piesenzana, isolated on top of the hill in the northern part of the village, as well as San Nazario and Celso Parish Church, one of the masterpieces of the Romanesque style in the Asti region, just a few kilometres to the northeast.

After Montechiaro, keep riding in the direction of Cortazzone. Cross over the main road SS 458 and begin the uphill climb. After less than 2 kilometres, close to the castle of Casasco, turn right continuing along the ridge to Soglio. The path continues downhill to Cortazzone; after 1 kilometre, cross the intersection and keep straight on in the direction of Montafia; after less than 1 kilometre ride, turn right on Mongiglietto hill: a short, steep climb which leads to the magical Church of San Secondo, another “place of the heart” where you can stop to admire the beauty of the Romanesque style.

Continue riding for about 1 kilometre until you descend rapidly to meet up with the provincial road to Montafia. Go through the village and turn left towards the cemetery to face a short but steep climb up to the charming Church of San Martino. Passing by the village of Bagnasco, don’t miss San Giorgio Church, another treasure to be discovered. Keep riding through the plains, in the direction of Capriglio. Go past the village, then uphill through Serra and again downhill by the impressive Sanctuary of Colle Don Bosco, up to Castelnuovo Don Bosco. The old village represents the landmark of the northern region surrounding Asti in the direction of Turin and a visit to its well-kept marvels is strongly recommended.

A long, panoramic ascent between the vineyards leads to Albugnano. Without entering the village descend to the left towards the Abbey of Vezzolano, a symbol of Piedmont and the most important highlight of our itinerary. Before reaching the abbey, you can stop at the edge of the village towards Vezzolano by the cemetery of Albugnano, and visit the Church of San Pietro.
