Preceding the race, an enthralling historical procession of over 1200 participants in sumptuous period costumes and a series of important side events, from the propitiatory dinners on the eve of the race to the colorful Palio of the Flag-wavers. A great, adrenaline-filled tradition that will culminate in the exciting race of bareback horses to claim the glory and the coveted Standard, accompanied by the festive blaring of trumpets and the incessant waving of flags and banners, amidst the shouts of cheering crowds.
THE PROGRAM OF THE DAY
10pm – AT THE CITY PARISHES horse and jockey blessing ceremony
11pm – SAN SECONDO SQUARE exhibition of the flag-wavers of the A.S.T.A.
2pm – CATHEDRAL SQUARE start of the historical procession: Cathedral square, Caracciolo street, Cairoli square, Alfieri street, Gobetti street, Garibaldi street, Gardini street, Alfieri square. The procession opens with the Team of the Captain of the Palio and the Flag- wavers of A.S.T.A. and closes with the Carroccio escorted by Warriors.
ALFIERI SQUARE 4pm – Race of the Palio with barebacked horses (without saddle) - Three batteries 5 PM – Exhibition of flag-wavers 6 PM – Final race of nine horses and assignment of the Palio to the winner
