AUDIO GUIDE The Religious Path
We recommend parking your car in Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Montà d’Alba. From there, follow Via Santuario, passing through Località Bertolini and the old decommissioned kiln, until you reach the hamlet of Laione.
At Laione, the trail meanders through vineyards characterized by unique red soils and reaches the Santuario dei Piloni (18th century). This ancient place of worship has Roman origins and is home to a traditional Via Crucis (Way of the Cross). Along the way, you will encounter the Romanesque Church of SS. Giacomo e Filippo Minore, thirteen hexagonal chapels containing statues depicting the Passion of Christ, and a Holy Sepulchre that concludes the devotional path at the hilltop.
Passing through Scotch pine forests, historic chestnut groves, and scenic overlooks of the Rocche del Roero, the path descends into the valley floor along the Valle Diana—named after the Roman goddess of the hunt. After crossing the Rio Canneto stream, the route merges with the Beekeeping Trail (Sentiero dell'Apicoltura) and climbs back toward Montà through a poplar grove where the Ciàbot Calorio (a traditional vineyard hut) is located. A final steady climb brings you back to the entrance of Via Placido Mossello and finally to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
