The history of the amaretti of Mombaruzzo dates back to the end of the 18th century, when the Mombaruzzo-born Francesco Moriondo, treasurer at the Mandria di Venaria, fell in love with a Sicilian girl, a confectioner at the royal house. Of all the girl's recipes, the best is undoubtedly the one concerning the preparation of an almond cake. Having retired from royal service, Francesco Moriondo returned to Mombaruzzo and, together with his companion, opened a small pastry shop where they baked and sold the first 'amaretti' biscuits, so called by the townspeople themselves, who used to comment in Piedmontese dialect ""Oh, i son bon...i son un poc amaret"": they are good, they taste slightly bitter!
