Lo zafferano dalle sabbie del mare (saffron from the sea sands) was born from the desire to recover the Banchini family's land once used as a quarry for sand extraction. In an effort to re-establish contact with nature, and thereby renew it, a land covered with fossils was discovered. They dated back to millions of years ago, when the hills of Monferrato were submerged by the sea that formed the Po Gulf, a land that is now the paleontological site of Cortiglione. Consideration was given to how such sandy soil could be used, and the idea settled on saffron, whose cultivation originally developed in the deserts of ancient Persia. It was later discovered that saffron was already being cultivated in Monferrato in 1400 and was among the most sought-after in European markets.
