Nobody knows exactly when or even why, but the strawberry plants reached Sommariva and here they found suitable soil and so much passion that today this tasty fruit is among the most sought-after. There are several hypotheses as to the origin of this vocation: some point to France, where the inhabitants of Sommariva used to seek their fortune in hard times, others to Mirafiori Castle where strawberries are said to have arrived in the 18th century to embellish the manor's gardens. The only thing that is certain is the name of the first person to bring strawberries to the Bra market in 1928: Giuseppe Cane, known as Pinotu 'd Mancin. It was very successful, they were very popular, but it was short-lived. The crisis of 1929 was about to hit and strawberries were certainly not one of the food priorities at the time, so marketing came to an abrupt halt. They tried again in 1938, it went well, but it was only after the end of World War II that the market dedicated to them was officially born: ""il posto delle fragole"" (the strawberry place) in Sommariva, which was soon followed by the Strawberry Festival. It was May 1954 and from then on it was a series of achievements and awards. Large in size, fleshy and fragrant, Sommariva Perno De.Co strawberries deserve to be discovered and tasted.
