It comes from afar, from Central America to be precise, but it has been cultivated in Italy since the 16th century and in Piea since time immemorial. Beautiful to look at, a symbol of Halloween, the partner of fairy godmothers who make carriages out of it, and the protagonist of many excellent recipes: the pumpkin is one of those fruits of the earth that unleashes your imagination. Part of the Cucurbitaceae family, it is sown in spring and its plant grows creeping for several metres until it produces this fruit that can sometimes reach a considerable weight. With its rounded shape and a colour reminiscent of the brightness of summer days, this garden product has obtained the De.Co. trademark as evidence of its historical and cultural connection with the municipality of Piea, where it has found an ideal place for its cultivation. The species cultivated here are Cucurbita Maxima and Cucurbita moscata, with an annual production of over 500 quintals. The Piea pumpkin is famous for its excellent flavour, and both a trade fair and a contest are held in its honour, resulting in the ''wonder pumpkin'' being awarded. This vegetable is used in the kitchen in various ways, but in Piea it has also influenced confectionery: a typical traditional Piedmontese dessert such as the Bacio di Dama, in Piea's version could only be pumpkin-based.
