In the heart of Monferrato, the Palio di Cocconato will celebrate its 57th edition in 2026. More than just a re-enactment, it is a collective ritual with roots dating back to the 1200s, when the determination of the villagers saved the castle by transporting water from the Marcellina Valley using donkeys. From that heroic act, one of the most honoured and nationally recognised historical events has emerged since 1970.
The medieval market transforms the village into an open-air stage featuring fire performers, craft stalls and street performances. The experience culminates in the revamped medieval banquet, enhanced by the night-time procession of the ‘lords of the villages’ alongside flag-wavers and musicians, where diners can interact directly with the nobles of the court.
