Towards the end of the 19th century, when Giolitti' Italy was preparing for its African adventures, the ingenious Marco Barbero di Cherasco, a man of humble origins, decided to learn the trade of pastry chef, and moved to Turin to work as an apprentice. A few years later, returning to his hometown, he opened an elegant confectionery shop in the city centre, which still today, with its wooden shelves, white marble tables and brass chandeliers, retains the same elegance as it did then. The bistro tables are reminiscent of the ladies, from the nobility and the bourgeoisie, who used to come here for chocolate or tea, in the company of the officers of the garrison or the Liceo-Ginnasio professors: Pastonchi and Bontempelli. King Victor and the handsome Prince Umberto used to go there in search of excitement; also some fierce invaders, which were tamed for a moment, went there; as well as ministers of the King and the Republic, powerful industrialists and bold financiers went. Now that Giancarlo Torta and his children Luca and Cristina have revisited the product range, the pastry shop is also visited by selected and educated tourists who are attracted by the beautiful town of Cherasco, and come here ready to enjoy the so called ""Baci di Cherasco®"" and taste other specialities.
