Sulphur Spring Trail
The Sulphur Spring Trail, a loop of about 7 km, takes about three hours to complete and is a very impressive nature experience: you will pass through wooded areas characterised by oak, chestnut and hazelnut trees, enjoy views and reach the Rio Lacciacode wetlands where the sulphur spring gushes out.
Founded by the Liguri Stanzielli, in pre-Romanesque times, Torre Bormida is famous for its terraces, the result of painstaking human labour to remove cultivable land from the steep, impervious hillsides. As you walk along this trail, you will pass through small plateaus built over the centuries: some used, others overgrown by forests due to decay, but they are all there to tell a thousand-year-old story of sacrifice and dedication.
The departure is from the village old town. When you reach the public weight turn right to continue along a narrow asphalt road towards Località Fossata. Once past it, continue along the hillside, between terraces and hazelnut groves, where the asphalt gives way to a well-maintained dirt road. When you reach a small country church, the trail descends and leads into a wood until you get to the valley floor where, following the signs, you will get to Rio Lacciacode and then to the sulphurous spring that gives its name to the trail, which is very close to SP 439.
Retrace your steps and continue keeping to the left into the valley to then climb up towards the village of Torre Bormida and arrive near the cemetery. A few hundred metres and you will be back among the splendid stone houses of this charming Langa village.
