Confraternity of San Francesco

Unexpected beauty: gems of art and history through the landscapes of the Roero.

Take a walk immersed in nature and enjoy the pleasures of the flora and fauna. Common sensations for anyone who decides to spend a day in the Langhe Monferrato Roero area. You wouldn't expect that right there, in the woods, among the meadows, a little piece of distant history, full of beauty and art, might suddenly reveal itself. You can, for example, reach Santa Vittoria d'Alba and come across a place of worship that looks like any other, but once you open the doors, you will be able to admire a cycle of incredibly beautiful 15th-century frescoes, a truly genuine gift.  Included in the circuit of the "Sentieri dei Frescanti" (Frescanti trails), art and nature itineraries of the Roero area, the Oratory of the Confraternity of San Francesco was probably built as a civil building and dates back to the 12th century. The Confratria Sancti Spiritus (Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit) was chosen as the headquarters of the charity association, set up to carry out works of charity, assist the sick, help the weak and accommodate pilgrims.

A story that engages and leaves nothing to chance.

A place made special by paintings depicting the passion of Christ that have survived in good condition. The church, which has been known since 1225, was embellished with a cycle of frescoes between 1490 and 1530. Nineteen paintings which, displayed along 34 linear metres of wall, like a storyboard, narrate the most dramatic moments in Christ's life: the entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Washing of the Feet, the Kissing of Judas, and so on through Calvary, the Crucifixion to the Resurrection. A detailed narration, rich in colour.

Confraternita di San francesco

A Via Crucis portrayed in all its drama.

A mystical silence pervades the room as the images unfold. The red-haired Judas is strikingly portrayed in several moments. Christ's gentle features are striking, surrounded by a multitude of characters, all perfectly recognizable and well-described, and create an original and at times folkloric religious tale that can be read by all and was probably created to address an uneducated public.
