Wolf Trail
The Wolf Trail is named after the toponym of Caialupo, the isolated hamlet it runs across along the path twisting in the harsh wood dating back to the Ancient Roman age and known as silva popularis.
The toponym witnesses the wolf presence in the Roero woods: although wolves largely proliferated in Piedmont since the 17th century, wolf pack slid to extinction because countryside has been gradually anthropized along the centuries. Nevertheless, wolf is still impalpably rooted in the local community imagery.
The Wolf Trail starts from Montà, a flat valley characterized by the presence of numberless centuries-aged chestnut trees, the so-called “della Madonna” (literally, Holy Mary’s) variety because of its early ripening. Then, the trail runs along meadows and ancient chestnut woods for long. Local chestnut trees are worth-enjoying vegetal monuments: half Roero chestnut trees grow in this area. After having reached Valle del Morto hamlet, the trail takes hikers to the village outskirts, and then to ascend to the hill ridge heights along the Rocche vineyards and sandy walls, as far as Montà village.
