Trails in the Hills of Fontanile
Fontanile is a village rich in water and springs, as its name would suggest, with so many years of history told through its monuments. It overlooks a narrow, clayey high ground, surrounded by hills draped in vineyards. A landscape to be enjoyed, as well as the monumental neo-Gothic parish church of San Giovanni Battista which, with its 53-metre high dome (the second largest in the Province of Asti), stands out unmistakably among the hills; the Ansaldi tower, the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Neirano, the former drawbridge, the Rocca well, the Archivolto degli Anerdi, and the Muraglione under the church overhang are all worth seeing.
A lively village that also tells its visitors about itself through paintings, and it does so generously with an art form that is available to everyone, with no opening hours or entrance fees. Fontanile has, in fact, decided to present art along the streets and walls of the old town. Thus, in this spirit of openness and welcome, the project “I muri raccontano” (Walls tell a story) was born: a perfect camouflage, created by a local artist, who has transformed the anonymous walls and façades of the houses into a veritable painted encyclopaedia telling the village's Renaissance past, as well as moments of rural life and craftsmanship. The walls of Fontanile are constantly evolving and every time you come back, you will find some new work waiting for you.
Art, but also pink and romantic notes with the “Angolo della Promessa” (Promise Corner): a place where couples who have chosen Fontanile for their wedding can impress the imprints of their joined hands on the wall of the Ex chiesa dei Battuti. The idea came about by chance thanks to the initiative of a Dutch couple, but was welcomed by the entire local community.
In this context, amidst art, history, landscape and culture, the CAI section of Asti has marked out some of the most evocative itineraries in Monferrato: three loop trails, marked by different colours, to be covered at your own pace so that the picturesque scenery and the beauty of these places will embrace you during hours of relaxation in the open air. The benefits are manifold, we all know that, they are both physical and mental: walking, preferably in company, improves our mood, reduces stress and the live sounds of the countryside are definitely better than any playlist you might hear at home.
