Trekking - Monferrato

Tour of the Five Towers – Stage 3

Once you have visited the tower and enjoyed the castle, you get back on the road and, soon after the small church just beyond Olmo Gentile, turn right along the asphalted road. At the aqueduct depot turn right again and walk up the hill along a little path through the woods until you reach an old dirt road.

You keep on climbing, first through an oak wood and then you will see a fence to your right, until you reach the ridge. Here you turn left onto the Roccaverano-Serole provincial road which takes you towards Roccaverano. After a few metres, if you want to avoid the asphalted road, turn left and follow the traces of the old road,  passing by a ruined stone house and then rejoin the asphalted road at the roadmenders’house.

At the junction with the Roccaverano - San Giorgio Scarampi provincial road, turn right and then descend along the provincial road to the next junction where you turn left. Now follow the red and white signs up to the charming village of Roccaverano, set amidst its sandstone houses. As you climb a stone staircase, you will see to your left a small wall entirely covered with saxifrage.

Next, you reach the pretty little square, bordered by the beautiful 14th-century carved and sculpted stone church designed by Bramante (a visit to the interior is highly recommended, the church is always open), facing the remains of the castle (with its stone mullioned windows) and the beautiful circular stone tower.  You can ask for the keys to climb the tower at the Pro-loco bar (which is in the same square).
