Sommariva Perno Trails
The village is a small hilltop hamlet in the heart of the Roero, and preserves the Mirafiori castle, which belonged to the "Bela Rosin", i. e. Rosa Vercellana, the morganatic wife of King Victor Emmanuel II and his lifelong great love. You can relive what has been described as Italy's last fairytale with an evocative itinerary split in stages around the old town.
The most characteristic element of the area are certainly the Rocche (rocks), real canyons that carve the land with an 11 km long crack, from Pocapaglia to Cisterna d'Asti. This is the legacy of the Tanaro river that diverted its course and covered everything here. Unusual landscapes, woods combined with panoramic balconies, lush vines created by a unique unrivalled soil.
Sommariva Perno, perched on the hilltop, offers 1 themed trail and a Forest Park that is unique in its genre (www.parcoforestaledelroero.it), a naturalistic oasis just a few steps from home that offers the chance to spend a day out in the green, in what is left of the last great forest of the Po Valley, the ancient silva popularis.
All the paths are signposted, and it is possible to extend the itinerary when crossing other paths heading to the Forest Park.
The S1, the Roero Great Route, and the MTB paths of the Roero Bike Tour also run through this area.
