S2 - Asphodels Trail

The Asphodels Trail is one of the “historical” paths in Roero, indicated as S2. It is a ring trail twisting in the ancient wood at “upper ends”: silva popularis stretches over large part of the territory laying North-West of Rocche, an important wood reserve dating back to Ancient Rome age, even if it is smaller today. Besides imposing oaks, poplars and scots pines, wonderful asphodels and periwinkles carpet along the trail in spring.

The trail starts from Montata delle Pietre area, deepening into a forest mixedly rich in: wild cherry trees, scots pines, oaks, chestnut trees, locust trees, and some invasive thorn bushes as well. Suddenly the trail comes across Buriasco, a very suggestive brook that can be passed by across a path made of two trunks. The path ascends running along a thick wood, as far as the hill ridge. Here and there some scots pines show off in a gravelly soil, dating back to the Mid/High Cenozoic Age. The path becomes very wide and flat, and among coppice chestnut trees it reaches at a large deforested area nearby Vidavì, the ancient Val della Vite (vine valley).

After having gone past Val della Vite, a paved road reaches Montata delle Pietre, the path starting point.
