Pillars’ Path

This itinerary can be found on the map named as “Trail C – D”. The trail C starts from the parish church – a nice example of restoration works that have unveiled the church sandstone – and heads South. After having passed tiny family kitchen gardens, hikers walk up to old terraces, today abandoned by grape cultivations and colonized by luxuriant broom clusters whose gold yellow carpets everywhere in June. Walkers are offered a wide panoramic view on Uzzone valley and its spurs characterized by its Southward terraced sides and its Northward wood sides. Wood population includes oaks, chestnut trees, some exemplars of white poplar, hazelnut and hornbeams bushes, and, in the coolest areas, birches, maple trees, fraxinus ornus and lime trees, while scots pine and downy oak grow in the driest environments.

Toward the valley, an imposing abandoned building: an old farmhouse, which used to be a key reference for local vineyards delivering uniquely scented Dolcetto grapes, while today is surrounded by brooms.  From the wall running along the path, the rock soapwort leans, together with tiny ferns, oregano, breckland thyme, and privet bushes, besides sessile oaks which possess a spirit as tenacious as people who built local walls. Back to the ridge, hikers walk back along the paved road that leads harried visitors to the ring trail.

On the other side, visitors who want to come in touch with nature can go ahead South-Westward along the slightly descending Trail D, on the face opposite to Uzzone valley. Firstly, hikers follow the walls of ancient terraced lands, then immerse into chestnut woods: for sure, these chestnut trees used to offer peasant families flavoured fruits that were food basics in winter. After having reached the route Southernmost point, walkers are back again out of the woods and border scraps of meadows and tiny hazelnut woods.

Then the pathway goes up and takes hikers back to the village, offering a very wide view over the typical Alta Langa cultivated lands: hazelnut trees, meadows-pasturelands, and cereal fields.
