Big Chestnut Trail

The Castagna Granda Trail is a comfortable path which, after a brief section in the wood, reaches the castagna granda (literally, the big chestnut) glade – there a monumental over 400-year-old chestnut tree shows off, with its over 10 metre circumferences: a giant, actually, standing in a flat meadow rich in centuries-old chestnut trees. To have a rest under their crowns is a worth-living experience!

The trail starts from Monteu Roero town centre, a wonderful viewpoint and natural balcony on some of the most beautiful Rocche in Roero. Hikers can walk down the main road as far as Belis farmhouse ruins, where one of the bloodiest events ever happened around mid-19th century. After having reached Avaj hamlet, the trail stretches to an impressive glade of centuries-old chestnut trees, where the castagna granda outstands.

Actually, a vegetal monument, listed by Piedmont Region among “Piedmont monumental trees” as one of the oldest chestnut trees in the region: experts have estimated it is 400 years old. The ring trail ends at the Middle Ages hamlet centre, after crossing a pine forest.
