Barbaresco loop trail
Mario Soldati used to call wine "poetry of the earth," and this itinerary will take you right into the middle of a lyric created by man for man, that is, among the Barbaresco rows which, like rhyming verses, will accompany you all along the way revealing all the beauty of these harmonious hills that are cultivated with loving care.
This 9-plus mile loop is not quite short, it will take you about three and a half hours to walk, but it promises to be a very pleasant and very scenic journey through the rows of vines that produce the grapes of the prized wine and picturesque historic villages. It is not recommended in the warmer months, due to the total absence of tree shade, but is incredibly impressive in spring when the vine leaves begin to colour the tidy vineyards green, or in autumn to enjoy the alluring red and golden hues of foliage.
You reach Neive, but if you wish, you can also start your journey from Barbaresco. We suggest you do so in a clockwise direction, starting from this lively old town. Descend towards the SP 3 along Via De Maria. At the roundabout you will find the signposts and continue right along Strada Fausoni. The little houses become more and more distant from each other and all around you is a sea of beautiful vineyards and hazelnut groves. Via Gaia runs along the hillside and descends until you get to a big farmhouse, which you pass by continuing on a dirt road that for a stretch runs alongside the railway line.
Keep to the right, you are at the foot of Barbaresco and you have to tackle a steep ascent through the vineyards to reach the top and the stunning viewpoint of the Torre. Take a break to admire the silhouette of the hills overlooking the Tanaro valley, and follow the road back up through the vineyards. After crossing the SP 3, take Via Gallina and turn right at the little church of Santa Croce: once past the cemetery, with a short detour onto Via Crocetta, take a break at the giant green bench. A few more metres uphill and you will reach the car park.
