Badger Trail
The Badger Trail is named after one of the locations it crosses: Tassera valley, the ancient Vallis taxeria, renowned for the numberless badger dens in its most hidden ravines. The badger is a widespread mammal both in Roero – the perfect environment for badger mostly underground lifestyle in quiet thick woods – and increasingly in the Rocche area. The Badger Trail offers hikers a wide landscape variety.
The path starts from piazza San Martino. After a long plain section, offering Roero hilltop villages views such as Monteu Roero castle, Cisterna d’Asti and the hills background, i.e., the Alps chain. The path runs along numberless vineyards – historical ones, mainly, that since the Middle Ages have found their natural habitat on these hills. The path goes on across shady woods and vineyards in Valdolmo area. In Valdolmo a mastodon fossil femur (thigh bone) was found (mastodon is a large elephant-like, herbivorous mammal from the Pleistocene era). The view goes further to include “acrobatic” vineyards, clung on steep slopes along the hill ridge: the hill is still intact and silent.
The ring trail ends after a breath-taking ascent to Vezza d’Alba along the ancient sternìa (Piedmont dialect for cobbled paving).
