Alta Langa Bianco
As white as the cheese produced on these hills, this 52 km long trail will take us by the hand into the deepest Alta Langa. Amidst woods, pastures and breathtaking views, you ride from village to village, past centuries-old chapels, castles perched on hilltops and little gems you might not expect. In Levice the route joins the Alta Langa Verde trail, while from Mombarcaro you can reach Paroldo and, from here, venture into the Langa Cebana.
White, as we know, is the sum of all colours and, along this trail, you will see lots of colours: the white trail will reveal itself as a true "pantone of nuances" created to give you emotions and reconnect you with nature.
We begin our tour in Monesiglio, an ancient village on the slopes of those hills that separate the Bormida Valley from the Uzzone Valley. Before starting or arriving, take a few minutes to visit this village, which is very proud of its castle with its crenellated towers, the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria dell'Acqua Dolce, the Silk Museum in the premises of the former spinning mill, and the small Langa Museum set up in what was once the home of the writer Maria Tarditi.
Then continue towards Prunetto where, on the way up, you can make a stop at the homonymous medieval castle that gives you the impression of having travelled in time even before travelling in space. At the foot of the manor you can also see the Santuario della Madonna del Carmine, built in the 14th centuryil edificato nel XIV secolo.
Breathe and take your time to admire the landscape around you and only afterwards set off again towards Levice, the small village that boasts an excellent production of honey and, of course, hazelnuts. Here you can choose whether to continue along the Alta Langa Verde trail or to follow this track and thus reach, at the bottom of the valley, the village of Gorzegno, where the ruins of the fortress speak to you of its ancient history.
As you keep on riding, please never forget to admire the landscape and listen to the sound of nature that shyly observes your progress and, in no time at all, you reach Niella Belbo and, soon after, San Benedetto Belbo among those hills that were so dear to Beppe Fenoglio who spent some periods of his life here. Perched on a hillock, Mombarcaro awaits you with its exquisite old town with its narrow cobbled streets, sundials and characteristic corners all to be admired. A unique vantage point that allows you to stretch out your gaze and, on clear days, even see the blue Ligurian Sea.
Once you are there, you can decide whether to return to Monesiglio or, go as far as Paroldo to get a taste of the Langa Cebana, with its lavender fields on hills that flirt, shyly, with the Apennines. Return along the road that led you to Paroldo and, at the crossroads, follow the signs to Noceto to reach your starting point.
White, then, as the product of the fusion of all the colours you have been admiring, as white is the fleece of the sheep that graze the pastures you have passed through, as white is their milk and so is the very tasty cheese made from it and which, of course, deserves to be fully savoured.
