MTB - Cantarana - Castellero

The Two Loops of Cantarana and Castellero

A medium difficulty route that combines the two souls of this area. As you ride through a combination of road and off-road track, you will be enchanted by the beauty of nature, which is the undisputed star here, with its hazelnut groves, picture-postcard landscapes and water springs. An absolute must!

The route consists of two interconnected loops. The first begins in Villafranca d'Asti and leads to the discovery of the Cantarana area, rich in water courses and springs. Actually, the name of the village itself refers to the presence of frogs and, therefore, water. These springs still feed the aqueduct built between the 19th and 20th centuries to bring water to the main town.

The route then takes you to the pretty little church of San Nazario and the Bonoma springs. At this point a break from your ride is a must so you can visit the aqueduct structures and discover all its secrets. Once you are back on the saddle, you pass through the "garden of orchids", whose habitat here is ideal for growing. Our route continues amid votive pillars and woods.

In the hamlet of Serralunga, across the Canale del Mulino (the mill canal), you join the second loop that first passes through the area surrounding Castellero, a natural balcony characterised by suggestive views and many hazelnut groves (Castellero is one of the "Hazelmut Cities"). Part of the route is about Castellero and the hazelnut, narrated by illustrative panels specifically designed for a family walk.

Once past the village, you continue towards Baldichieri d'Asti along the so-called "Via del Conte" (literally: The Count’s route), an ancient route that connected the castle of Castellero (which still exists) to the one in Baldichieri (destroyed in 1553 and of which only a few traces are left).

From Baldichieri d’Asti we turn westwards to return to the point where the two loops cross and thus ride back to our starting point.
